At Safe Distance

Then came a day in early spring when she heard a whistle. She looked over and at first didn’t see anything. Suddenly there was movement from behind a tree. She saw peeking around the tree trunk was the same face she had seen on that rainy morning.


Dolly looked at her house and judged there was no way she could take off running and win a race against that thing. As tall as it was she figured it probably would cover nearly two to her every one step. She wasn’t a math genius but she could figure out how that race would end. There was no choice but to act like everything was okay. Dolly continued to walk to her house. The beast continued to whistle. It was very subtle yet undeniable. An odd thing to encounter for certain.


Now Dolly was certain the creature existed her shyness at telling her father was much less than before. She knew he believed what she said but she wanted to keep it that way. Now she could go to him with complete confidence. This all was going through her mind while another part of her mind was totally focused on reaching the house. It offered very little protection from the creature if it decided it wanted in but while out there on that gravel road walking to the house, it seemed like a fortress by comparison.
