At Safe Distance

I had Burt follow me over to my flatbed keeping the headlights on me the entire way. Neither of us knew where the eyes had went when the cop turned off his flashing lights. I reached into the truck cab and pulled out a flashlight that has something like a million of whatever they use to measure light. Suffice to say it was a really bright flashlight. I turned the beam on while it was aimed in the direction of where I had last seen those eyes and was shocked to catch what looked like a German Shepard’s head duck down into the cover of the trees.

They eyes that flashed back at me for just a second were indeed of an amber nature. They showed no sign of fear that I could detect. Just surprise to have a light shone on it so suddenly. I wasted no time throwing the flashlight back into the truck cab and I followed it right after. The truck was already running. I threw it into gear and took off with Burt right behind me. That elk bounced on the edge of the flatbed for ten miles before I finally whipped the truck off to the side of the road where Burt helped me to finish getting it pulled up onto the flatbed.

We continued on from there to the spot where we unload the dead bodies. We both agreed we had seen something with a dog or a wolf’s head but that was way too big, too tall, to ever be a canine of any sorts known to man. We also agreed we wouldn’t be making any reports which was out of the ordinary. I didn’t need any further review from the brass above and Burt just starting out, didn’t want to do so from a negative.
