I’m getting ahead of myself. At first everything was fine. We even fooled around and ended up naked with our clothes piled up in no particular order and then actually getting them strung around due to our rolling around on the sleeping bags. We were laying there, I was on top of her and she on her back when both of us caught wind of that odor and at first I thought it was just a skunk, possibly a family of skunks, moving along their merry way. I grew up in Kansas and back there it was fairly common if you were one to be out late at night to encounter a skunk or family of skunks going along to wherever they go. They don’t have to spray their stink in order for a person to be able to smell them. They just have to have somewhat recently have sprayed and there will be enough caught on their fur to more than amply announce when they are in the area. I should probably have mentioned we were without phone service. Neither of us has anybody or any reason that someone would try to contact us in the middle of the night so to us it was nothing to be out of reach of the phone company on any given night or even nights for that matter. We were both twenty-eight and free of responsibility for anything other than taking care of ourselves. When we got back I would return to working on a ranch owned by my father and she would go back to being a secretary at a local law firm. Until then however we really had nobody to answer to and nobody answering to us. The reason I mentioned there was no phone service is that I imagine if I didn’t that all through the rest of the story you would be wondering why we didn’t call for help even if it couldn’t have arrived in time to be of help. next page | |
