He tried one last thing. He bought a couple of German Shepards to guard the property. They lasted two weeks before disappearing. No sign of either dog was ever found. A week later two more cages of rabbits were taken. Those were the first since all that was left were the most recent litter. Walking Tree was not out of business however. He still had some rabbits left he could use to rebuild his empire, such as it was. The problem was that Walking Tree was beaten. He turned the remaining rabbits loose to fend for themselves. Some time passed. Eventually he decided to try again. By that point in time he had spoke with those who had a different perspective on the matter. One person suggested, or rather pointed out, that when it was all fresh the creature was just taking two rabbits per raid. Maybe the cost of doing business was whatever it costs to raise the herd, plus two rabbits every once in a while. Walking Tree gave it a shot. He built his pen and rabbit cages again. This time however he made two rabbit cages available outside the wired pen. He was visited that night and the only thing taken were the two cages outside the pen. About twice a month through the rest of the winter the cages would get taken. Eventually Walking Tree got wise and made the cages easier to get open so the creature would just take the rabbits and not the cages as well. It probably suited the sass as much as him because carrying those cages was bulky at the least. next page | |
