My name is Kevin, leaving out my last name for reasons that will become apparent. For the last ten years I have worked for the state of Utah in the part of the government that handles road emergencies that do not involve wrecks of more than one vehicle and an animal. Yes that is right, I work in the roadkill department. That’s what we call it. It is also the place you get sent when you are being punished. Which is why I am working there after gaining ten years under my belt. To be frank I probably should have been fired. I punched somebody for running over a sack that had some cats in it. I’m pretty sure the guy was the same one who threw them out there in the first place because who intentionally tries to hit a sack that is moving around on the road. The guy had to know there was something alive inside that burlap bag. Anyways it didn’t end well because he sued the state and won a chunk of money and I would have been fired but I had a perfect record before this incident. The shrink that interviewed me took mercy and said that I was temporarily out of my mind when I smacked the guy upside the head. So I was on duty the night the call came in about a cougar and an elk being dead in the middle of I-80 at two in the morning. Since it was a double-death both myself and another guy, a youngster who had been with the department about a month and a half, were sent in separate vehicles to get the bodies loaded up onto our flatbeds and take them to a spot where we were currently dumping the dead bodies found on the roads. next page | |
